Customer Response

An excellent ice cream maker and a super value!
I have had this ice cream maker for a few weeks now and have made four or five batches (1/2 gallons) of smooth and creamy ice cream. Each side makes one quart and you can set the machine to make one or two quarts of ice cream by flipping a control lever on the front which turns off one side or lets both side run. This allows you to make up to two different flavors at the same time.

PROS
----
1. Works well - I read some reviews which said that they couldn't get the mix to harden. All I can say is I had no trouble whatsoever.
2. Works fast - If you follow the instructions (have a well frozen bowl and cold cream mix) it will start thickening after about ten minutes or less. By 20 to 25 minutes or less, it's as hard as it will get, about the consistency of soft serve ice cream like Dairy Queen. We usually eat one bowl right away and put the second bowls contents into another container and put it in the freezer overnight. The next day it's just like store bought (only fresher and much tastier!).
3. Good quality - (as good as your ingredients.) We followed the basic included recipes and had great results with those as well as experimenting some with a 50/50 cream & whole milk ratio to reduce some of the fat. We even tried making gelato with recipes for home ice cream makers I found elsewhere. Gelato actually has less fat than ice cream as it's mostly whole milk. I had very good results with gelato too.
4. Inexpensive - We paid ~$50 which is a great price for a device thats works as well as this does.

CONS
----
1. A little noisy. No big deal though, you just hear the motor turning. It's really not that bad.

TIPS
----
1. After mixing your cream mix, put it back in the refrigerator or in the freezer for 10 minutes or so. Then take the mixing bowls out of the freezer just before you pour in the cream mix. The extra drop in temperature will really help speed up the freezing times. You'll be surprised at how fast it starts thickening.
2. To reduce fat content (but still have creamy smooth ice cream), try decreasing the heavy cream and increasing the whole milk by the same amount. I have tried 50/50 and it still comes out great!
3. Use only wooden or teflon spoons to scoop out the frozen mix from the mixing bowls. I learned this lesson the hard way on a previous brand and ended up scratching the mixing bowls.

Enjoy - Dennis

Awesome Creamy Ice cream!
I have never made ice cream before I bought this. It is awesome! I love that it has 2 bowls and so you can make 2 different flavours at the same time.
I made some pistachio ice cream from Jeni's Splendid Artisan Ice cream recipe which uses no eggs for the custard base but is thickened with cornstarch from here:

[...]

It came out really delicious! Will never buy store bought ice cream again!

Like lots of others, I too had a tough time deciding between this one and the kitchen aid attachment. Why this is better:
1) The freezer bowl is smaller so it doesn't take up too much room in my tiny and already overcrowded freezer
2) The freezer bowl has a stable base unlike the KA one so you can set it on the counter and it's not as difficult to handle esp when cold and slippery
3) I can make 2 flavours at the same time
4) While it is an extra appliance on my counter, I find that I can store it in the wasted space right behind my Kitchen aid so it doesn't really take up THAT much more room.

Cons:
1) It is a little louder than I expected but not overpoweringly so.
2) the casing is made of plastic and not metal as suggested by the metallic silver colour. Hence it does not seem very durable.

Great Ice Cream Maker
I haven't had this a month yet but I've made 4 batches of ice cream. The first one turned out softer than I had wanted and just got softer the longer I ran it. I was starting to regret my purchase but decided to wait til I'd made more ice cream in it to really judge it. I'm so glad I waited - it makes GREAT ice cream! Comes out as soft serve but I put it in the chest freezer for awhile and it's hard. The soft serve way is ok to eat - frozen quite a lot actually - especially around the sides. I now know why the first batch wouldn't get hard enough - I'd only had the bowls in the chest freezer 6 hours and that was from delivery temp., room temp. and hot water dish washing temp. Now it's at least 5 days in between the times I make a batch and it gets as hard, if not harder, than my freezer makes I have to use ice and rock salt with. And without all that mess! The first batch was made with one of the packages you can buy at the grocery store - won't be using that again - it gets rock solid hard in the chest freezer - ugh! Since then I've used the sweetened condensed milk recipe and it's soft enough to dip right out of the chest freezer - but it's very sweet. Today I used a recipe that calls for a pudding package (small,) an egg (cooked custard before freezing), and Splenda sugar blend, and it turned out great. We were buying Blue Bell and now we have homemade that tastes as good a Blue Bell for a lot less than Blue Bell costs. I'm so glad I purchased this! AND, Amazon has the best price for it AND free shipping!! Can't beat that....

Great machine
This appliance works great! I needed to make multiple ice cream/sorbet recipes in one day for a CDKitchen recipe testing event and my single unit ice cream maker wasn't going to cut it so I purchased this unit. We made two ice cream recipes at once and they both turned out awesome. Next I'd like to try making one sorbet and one ice cream to see how the machine handles different types of recipes at once since it doesn't let you specify the desired density (like some ice cream makers do). The unit is also easy to clean and the freezer canisters chilled pretty quickly.

Creates soft-serve style ice cream in 20 minutes
I worked in a gelato shop before and I am impressed that a machine of this price can create ice cream that almost rivals machines that cost a few thousand dollars.

I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the space the product takes up. It is as big as a toaster oven - just the motor stand - and the bowls take up a good part of your freezer. You have to be dedicated to making ice cream on a regular basis to get a 2 bowl model. However, on the upside, you can create 2 flavors simultaneously and it does make it easier to make ice cream in batches.

This product works as advertised. It will create ice cream, albeit, soft serve or gelato consistency ice cream in about 20-25 minutes. It is noisier than I thought (another reason for the 4 stars) - it's about as loud as your typical dishwasher (in terms of decibels). It sounds like a grinder when it works. I don't understand why it makes so much noise though, it must be the way the motor is designed.

Using this machine requires a little bit of planning. First, you must have the bowls frozen for at least 12 hours. I keep them in the freezer for 24 hours between batches. You must also use chilled ingredients. If you are going to heat up an ice cream mix, say, a custard style ice cream, make sure to chill those ingredients.

Don't overfill the container. If you plan on mixing in ingredients, I recommend leaving at least 3 inches of space from the top because ice cream liquids will expand when frozen. The fattiest parts of the ice cream (and the creamiest) stay at the bottom of the tub. The softer part of the ice cream stays at the top.
