Kettle has design problems
I really wanted to like this kettle. I'm a huge fan of electric kettles in general. This one seemed good at first but over a period of about three years has gotten more and more troublesome. The first part to fail was the filter screen in the spout. It fell apart pretty quickly. That wasn't a big problem as we don't have super hard or dirty water; we'd just use it without the filter. Next the steam detector got finicky. It's supposed to shut itself off once the water boils, but after a while this became unreliable. Turning the lid causes a little tab to stick out of the lid and close the spout. With the spout closed the boil detector worked again, but it was hard to remember to close the spout every time. Then you also had to remember to open it before pouring. So we limped along with that for a few more months. Finally it began leaking water from the plastic windows on either side that let you see the water level. I guess the plastic had hardened and was no longer reliably water tight. With water dripping down the sides and pooling around the electric base, we had to retire the kettle.
It seems like all three of these problems are design flaws, not just problems with the one we bought. Perhaps it's just that we boil a lot of water. In any event, my verdict is that this is a nice kettle, but not built to last.
junk ... crappy junk
Nothing but trouble, faulty lid, faulty base ... I have spent two years tinkering, trying to keep it going but alas it has finally become the lame duck of tea kettles.
Our previous kettle T-fal lasted 3 times as long.
Great design, poor quality
We have gone through three of these kettles in about four years. I like the design and the fact that it brings water to the boil much more quickly than any other kettle.
On the first one, the thermostat failed after a few months. Krups couldn't repair it and gave us a new kettle. On the replacement kettle, the switch (that's operated either manually or by the thermostat) failed after less than a year. Krups again gave us a new one. This third one had a broken lid after a few months. I bought a new lid earlier this year, which was available only in black, although the original one was white. It cost $20 including postage. Now this third kettle again has a broken thermostat and will not shut off automatically.
Overall, a very nicely designed product but very, very, very cheaply made.
On / Off Switch Broke after 6 Months
I spent a good deal of money on this kettle, only to have the on / off toggle switch fail after six months. It's not easily accessible on the handle - so I am skeptical about it being repaired. I have not contacted Krups yet, but I feel like I have a $50 pencil can.
Frustrating Design
Pros:
Heats very quickly
Cordless with convenient base station
Can be filled without removing the top
Cons:
Handle shape inconvenient to hold - pick up.
Too easy to touch hot areas by mistake when grasping handle
Somewhat complex top (cover) design that can be difficult to remove and
replace
I just received this pot and would probably not have chosen it as I think there is probably another one of equal or lower price that I now would have preferred. I bought in on line and don't have the energy to return it and try again. It heats water well, and I think I will like it well enough, but I definitely have mixed feelings. I plan to try to add some sort of insulation near the handle to reduce the frustration of touching hot areas when picking it up.
