Customer Response
I felt fooled by Brita!
The "electronic Filter Change Indicator" is just a timer that counts down to two months. I thought, and many other customers did too, that it could measure water flow and tell me when the 40 gallon limit was reached!
Given the large price markup Brita sets on this product vs. other almost identical pitchers using the simple CalendarMinder, I felt fooled!
Ok quality for the price
The quality of the individual materials is good, but the lid comes out too easily when I am pouring water. I didn't expect this lack of assembly quality in a +$30 pitcher...
Not sure what all the complaints are about
I've had this pitcher for about a week now and it's fine. I see a lot of people complaining about the lid and spilling, but I couldn't duplicate those problems even if I tried.
The pitcher comes with 1 filter - make sure you read the directions before using (soak the filter in water for 15 minutes, clean, etc). Very simple setup, but important in order for your filter to work properly.
Not a huge capacity pitcher, but I mostly use the water to fill my Saeco espresso machine so the size is perfect. I can definitely taste a difference in the water- the espresso tastes better (perhaps that's just my imagination?), but on its own I prefer the taste of good old Chicago tap water to the Brita water, but they're both good.
Overall a good value if you're looking for a water pitcher. I did my research and this model rated highest with Consumer reports - if you're debating between Britas buy the Aqualux over the cheaper models - this removes more of the harmful chemicals than the other.
Returning for Refund
After making some initial mess on my kitchen floor, I figured out how to get around the lid issue by simply holding it down when pouring the water. Okay, that was easy, and I could live with a tiny bitty inconvenience of holding the lid down with each pour. Because the pitcher could get pretty heavy when filled with water, I also learned to be very careful when laying it on my tiled kitchen island in fear the plastic bottom might break. I was willing to live with it. However, I can't afford to continue to drink the filtered water in spite of great taste due to continuous presence of carbon particles. Yes, I read and followed the instructions so I did expect some carbon particles floating around during the initial refills. But after more than a dozen refills? These are hardly detectable by a quick look but they're there. Good thing that my boys were able to see them lot better than me. To think that my family's been drinking all those carbon particles... Guess you could say we're well "filtered."
EDIT:
After returning this item, I decided to give the PUR 7-Cup Pitcher a try. Well, folks, I'm pretty happy with the decision and the choice. Its lid is very tight and I had initial difficulty opening the lid, but I figured out a very simple solution to this by lifting the lid from the handle end with my right hand fingers and pressing it up with my left thumb. Most importantly, I found no carbon particles after a couple run of it. Since several reviewers complained about its slow filtering time, I was expecting that. However, it actually filters slightly faster than the Brita counterpart.
The lid is sooooo irritating
We bought the older model with manual timer two and a half years ago. We are happy with the taste and have no issue (yet) with the quality of the different parts. On the other hand, the lid has never ever stayed in its place. I had to hold the pitcher with one hand and the lid with the other. Not always practical so now, we take off the lid (well, sometimes hubby forgets and I know it when I hear him growling) but come on, we are not supposed to "play" with that. Also I don't like the black particles standing in the top tank.
Hoped the new model's lid would have been fixed, I'm disappointed...
